Tai Chi for Arthritis

If you live with arthritis or another joint, mobility or balance condition, Tai Chi for Arthritis can often help.  I myself have joint, mobility & balance problems, & Tai Chi for Arthritis has helped me improve strength, flexibility, balance, co-ordination & mobility.  Tai Chi for Arthritis is Sun style tai chi (Sun Lutang, 1860 - 1933) modified by Dr Paul Lam, a Chinese-Australian GP who was crippled by arthritis as a teenager.  It was created  to be as joint-friendly as possible.  Dr Lam is the founder of the Tai Chi for Health Institute, https://taichiforhealthinstitute.org a worldwide organisation promoting tai chi & researching the benefits, which are very many.  Tai Chi for Arthritis focuses on improving strength, flexibility & mobility for arthritis sufferers.  For some, there is a reduction in pain.  For many, there is improved range of movement.  Do note that this is real tai chi, & it's fantastic for all fitness levels, & good for promoting a sense of wellbeing whatever your ability.

Sun style tai chi

Created by Sun Lutang (1860-1933), who modified ancient tai chi so that it has a high stance, - i.e. no deep knee-bends, & short steps, so is already good for joint problems.  All styles of tai chi are mindful practices, & promote mental wellbeing as well as physical health.  Tai chi is often referred to as "Meditation in movement."  As well as improved strength, flexibility & balance, practising tai chi brings a sense of community with other students, & a satisfying sense of mastery & personal growth.

Seated Tai Chi Classes

Seated Tai Chi brings as many benefits as standing tai chi.  Those who practise seated tai chi actually improve not only in strength & flexibility, but also in balance & mobility.  Seated Tai Chi is available at your home or care-home & can be done in a wheelchair.

Personal Journey

I have studied multiple martial arts & three styles of tai chi.  In my fifties I was forced to give up salsa, flamenco dance & flamenco guitar, & even tai chi because of joint, balance & neurological problems.  In 2019 I discovered Tai Chi for Arthritis, & after eighteen months I qualified to teach.

What is Tai Chi for Arthritis?

Tai Chi for Arthritis is a gentle exercise programme designed to improve balance, strength, and flexibility, specifically tailored for those with joint issues.

Can I attend classes with mobility issues?

Absolutely! My classes are inclusive and cater to individuals with significant joint, balance & neurological problems.

What should I wear to class?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes suitable for indoor exercise to allow freedom of movement.

Do I need to have any experience in Tai Chi?

No previous experience is required.  I will guide you literally every step of the way.

How do I join a class?

To join a tai chi class at Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville, call Peter on 07946 20 37 20 or email taichicoalville@outlook.com.  Alternatively you can  just turn up at 1:30 on a Monday.

You can just turn up at 6:30 on a Thursday, but please arrive by 6:20 otherwise the access to the teaching room will be locked & I can't hear you knock Marlene Reid Centre: 85 Belvoir Road, Coalville LE67 3PH.

Mon 1:30 - 3:00 - £4, or Thurs 6:30 - 8:00 - £6:00

Seated Tai Chi :-  Private lessons at your home or care-home.

Private lessons :- available online & at your home, or at mine if you can come by bicycle - (there is no parking).

£25 for an hour.  Includes qi gong, known as Chinese yoga.
